I tend to look at the financial markets and the bookies for a hint of collective wisdom in situations like this. \u00a0Both\u00a0were badly wrong on Brexit, surprising many and leading to a sharp reversal in\u00a0the\u00a0anticipatory market rally in the days leading up to the vote.\u00a0The UK stock market (FTSE 100) is now right back to where we were at the market close on the Friday\u00a0before\u00a0Brexit week. \u00a0Up and down. \u00a0Back where we started.<\/p>\n

The same can’t be said for the pound, down from 1.47 GBP-USD\u00a0resting for the moment around 1.33. \u00a0Nor can the same be said for the UK government, it’s leader, the UK credit rating, the political and economic future of Great Britain and NI and while we’re at it, the English football team and manager. \u00a0All has changed. \u00a0Maybe not down and out\u00a0but certainly uncertain.<\/p>\n

I was very disappointed – I’m a dual citizen of the UK and Canada and aside from thinking that Brexit was a bad idea for the country in many respects, I selfishly liked the prospect of my children growing up with the opportunity to work and travel freely across Europe. Was it enough to compel me to vote even though I\u00a0could have?\u00a0Unfortunately not.<\/p>\n

There is a lot of rhetoric swirling around since the results of the vote about political loopholes to\u00a0maybe\u00a0block the referendum results or ways to have a “do-over” vote. \u00a0Both of these things would probably make things worse, not better. \u00a0While referendum democracy is not ideal, reneging on it’s\u00a0results\u00a0may be\u00a0worse. \u00a0When the heat subsides, perhaps\u00a0the “remain” voters will\u00a0see the irony in their protestations\u00a0that those\u00a0who\u00a0voted to “leave” might have made a mistake or\u00a0are ignorant of\u00a0the issues. \u00a0 Another vote might just\u00a0yield an even further entrenched\u00a0result for the leave\u00a0camp.<\/span><\/p>\n

But I digress – what should you do as an investor during\u00a0this Brexit inspired volatility?<\/p>\n
